How an ad is assessed at Philmarket
This page is not contract text. It describes what we look at when we review an application, and how to make an ad we can accept. What binds is in terms §12 — which also sets out the grounds on which we refuse or take down an ad.
Who can advertise. Advertising is sold to business accounts. The campaign must have a substantive connection to philately or an adjacent collecting field — auctions, dealers, catalogues and publications, albums and accessories, fairs and exhibitions, clubs and societies, and expertising. You state your business and describe the connection when you apply, and that description is what the review starts from.
What an ad consists of. An image, a headline and a link. Nothing else comes onto our pages with it.
- The image is uploaded to us. We accept JPEG, PNG and WebP — not SVG. It is re-encoded and served from our own domain.
- The headline is plain text.
- The link goes to a page on Philmarket. A destination outside Philmarket can be accepted, but only after we have reviewed it.
How your ad is measured, and what you get back. We count total impressions and clicks per campaign. That is also all you get from us: we provide no information about individual visitors, because we have none. Which ad is shown is decided by placement and schedule, never by who is looking.
We send no referrer when someone clicks — the destination is not told that the visitor came from here. That is precisely because an analytics or advertising suite on your page could otherwise build an audience out of our visitors. Once there, your page sees the visitor’s IP address and sets its own cookies; that is beyond what we can control, and it is why the rule on the link target in §12 is a condition on you rather than a block on our side.
The distinction we go by is not whether anything is measured, but whose purpose the measurement serves: following up your own campaign is one thing; plugging in a service whose business is profiling visitors and selling the data on is another. The second does not belong here.
The grounds in the terms
This is how the grounds read in terms §12. They are shown here straight from the terms — that is where they change, and only there.
- (a) No substantive connection to philately or an adjacent collecting field. The ad, or what it links to, does not match the business and the connection you declared when you applied.
- (b) The goods or service may not be offered here. The ad concerns something a seller could not lawfully list on Philmarket — forged or repaired material presented as genuine, stolen goods, sanctioned or otherwise illegal items (§9).
- (c) Claims that do not hold. The ad states something untrue, misleading or unsubstantiated, or leaves out something the reader needs in order to understand the offer.
- (d) Another's marks or identity. The ad uses someone else's trade mark, name or sign without right, or gives the impression of coming from someone else — another seller, an organisation, or Philmarket itself.
- (e) Children. The ad is aimed at or exploits children, or depicts children inappropriately.
- (f) Illegal or offensive content. Hate, harassment, sexual or violent content, or content that is otherwise illegal.
- (g) Misleading design. The ad is made to be mistaken for editorial content or for an ordinary listing in the catalogue, or uses fake system dialogs, fake close buttons or hidden links.
- (h) The ad is not the one that was approved. The image, headline or link target is not what the approval was based on.
- (i) The ad is used to collect information about our visitors for someone else. The link must go to your own offer, not to an advertising, measurement or redirect service. The destination page may not use services that profile visitors on behalf of third parties. You are responsible for it not doing so, and for it not starting to later — we review the link target when the campaign is approved, but we do not monitor your page after that. Nor may you place any measurement on Philmarket's pages — no pixel, no tag, no measurement script, no click tracking beyond our own aggregate counter — and you cannot ask us to add one.
- (j) A decision by a court or competent authority.
